Maiden Rock Apple Orchard and Pepin County 4-H are co-sponsoring a Family Fun Day and Pumpkin Carving/Painting Contest, open to public and for all ages!  October 10, 2009 from 10:00 am to Noon. The fun day and contest will be held at Maiden Rock Apple Orchard near Stockholm, Wisconsin.  Come spend a morning with your family at the apple orchard! 

 

The family fun activities will be conducted by the Pepin County 4-H Teen Leaders – SYC organization.  Activities will include art & crafts sessions for all ages, such as leather craft activity, straw rockets, plastic lacing, ice cream in a bag, nature frames and hayrides.  The activities will take place during the pumpkin judging.  There will be a small fee for the fun activities to cover the cost of materials.

New this year – Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off! New and seasoned growers of giant pumpkins will gather with their gigantic beasts to compete in each of three categories: Heaviest Pumpkin. Most Beautiful Pumpkin, and Most Unusual Pumpkin.

Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off Entry guidelines:  

  1. Contest is open to all growers.
  2. Pumpkins must be grown, cared for, and entered by the weigh-off contestant.
  3. Each contestant is limited to one entry.
  4. Pumpkins that have won prizes in any other weigh-off competitions are not eligible to enter that same pumpkin.
  5. Weighing will begin at 7 a.m. and will be concluded at 10:00 a.m. Late entries will not be accepted.
  6. Heaviest Pumpkin will be determined by weight. Vines must be trimmed to within one inch of the stem of the fruit. The judges have the right to inspect any and all fruit before weights and measurements become official.
  7. Most Beautiful Pumpkin and Most Unusual Pumpkin will be judged on color, shape and size. Decisions of the judges are final in all cases.
  8. In the event of a tie, prizes will be distributed equally among the tied parties.

Pumpkin Contest Entry guidelines:         
  1. No entry fee for participating in the pumpkin contest.
  2. Each entry must be carved or painted by the exhibitor(s)
  3. Maiden Rock Apples will provide the pumpkins at no cost; please pick them up one week prior to the event.  Or you are welcome to use your own pumpkin.
  4. Maiden Rock Apples also has available pumpkin carving kits at a discount price for those participating.
  5. Acceptance of Maiden Rock donated pumpkin and/or carving kit is an agreement to participate in the contest.
  6. Only one entry per person and group (a person can enter one individual and one group; but not two individual entries or two group entries).
  7. Exhibitor(s) must be present during judging to accept their prizes.
  8. Pumpkins are to be carved/painted and ready for judging at Maiden Rock Apples, starting at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 10 (please carve/paint your pumpkins at home). Late entries will not be accepted.

Prizes:  Prizes awarded per age group and category.  Prizes are the donations of local business. Representatives from the artistic, educational, agricultural, and 4-H communities will judge all entries. Decisions of the judges are final.

 

Following the judging, winners are welcome and encouraged to have their pumpkin displayed at one of the local businesses donating prizes.  Entry forms available at Maiden Rock Apples or Local Extension Office, forms will be available the day of the contest, pre-registration not required, but very helpful.
